Overview

An afternoon stroll through the backstreets of traditional Tokyo, starting from Uguisudani Station, taking in the famous Yanesen district encompassing Yanaka, Nezu and Sendagi, and terminating at Nippori Station

Highlights

A tour which is the ideal antidote to an overdoes of big-city life. While featuring visits to Nezu Shrine and Yanaka Ginza, the tour winds through a picturesque graveyard, stops at gallleries and offers (subject to opening) the opportunity to discover some of the traditional tastes and crafts of Tokyo (galleries and shop visits subject to opening).

NEZU SHRINE

Nezu Shrine ‘s roots can be traced back 1900 years, to when Edo was still a fishing village, long before it became Tokyo and grew into a metropolis. The current shrine dates from 1706, and is a fine example of the ‘gongen’ architectural-style, which contrasts vermilion and gold lacquer. Other highlights of the Shrine are its closely rowed gates, in the style of the famous Inari Shrines, and its 6,600 square metre Azalea Garden, venue for the shrine's famous Azalea Festival from early April to early May.

YANAKA GINZA

Yanaka Ginza is one of the unfortunately ever-dwindling number of street markets where one can experience Tokyo life which while totally authentic, feels like a nostalgic step back to a warmer, friendlier age. Here, grocery and specialist food stalls and shops are interspersed with toy, watch and clothes shops, all sharing the singular similarity of being a vital part of the tapestry of life in this charming corner of the metropolis. Prices are cheap, snacks are local and usually very tasty, and the over-riding feeling is the energy and warmth generated by the local people going about their everyday life.
