Taiko Drums or ‘Wadaiko’ (Japanese Drums) were introduced to Japan from China around 2,000 years ago. At first they were mainly used in warfare, but subsequently became a part of the Gagaku musical culture of Japan’s Ancient Imperial Court .
The modern, highly energetic performances, images of which the word ‘Taiko’ now conjures, only developed in post-2nd World War Japan, and are reputed to have originated from the idea of a Jazz Drummer, Daihachi Oguchi, who decided to incorporate Jazz drum settings and rhythms into a Taiko performance he was making for a local shirne. From there, the culture of large scale, staged Taiko Drumming performances has developed, to the extent that it is now popular throughout the world.
