  • THE REAL TOKYO 1 - FUKAGAWA

Overview

An afternoon of discovery is one of Tokyo's least explored and most interesting districts, visiting some of the city's finest shrines, museums and parks, while discovering the locations where the Pacific War officially ended, a pavilion built to commemorate a visit by Winston Churchill, and one of the most authentic recreations of daily life in historical Tokyo

Highlights

Visit Fukagawa Fudo and Tomioka Shrine, each one of the finest Buddhist & Shinto landmarks in Tokyo, juxtaposed to reflect the importance of each belief in japanese life. Also, visit the Fukagawa Edo Museum and the charming Kiyosumi Gardens.

TOMIOKA HACHIMAN SHRINE

Tomioka Hachiman Shrine is the largest Hachiman Shrine in Tokyo, and one of the city's most significant Shinto Shrines. In addition to being the base for one of Tokyo's three great summer festivals, it is the home to Japan's finest golden mikoshi (portable shrine carried at festivals) and a number of Sumo-related artefacts, most notably the Grand Champion Sumo Wrestler Stone. And, on a lesser known note, discover the site and story of how and where the Pacific War officially ended.

FUKAGAWA EDO MUSEUM

Tucked away in the backstreets of historical and residential Tokyo is the unobtrusive Edo-Fukagawa Museum, where as one enters, one takes a step back in time. Almost the whole museum is a recreation of Edo (modern-day Tokyo) in its middle-aged origins, with reproduction houses, furnishings and facilities, and maps and documents dating from that time. There are, on occassion, related exhibitions within the premises, but this is an opportunity to feel the closeness and simplicity of life 300 years ago, when Japan was isolated from the rest of the world, in an age which incubated most of what we now consider to be japanese culture.
